Living on a Sinking Ship

Friday, July 10th, 2009

I was thinking of changing the name of my blog since (besides not writing often) I don’t write much about being a mom or feminism as I thought I might originally. However, the issues that concern me most these days are global warming, species extinction, over population, peak oil, and everything else in the “ecological apocalyptic” vein. The old saying “Women and Children First” referred to the need to save the women and children when a ship was sinking. Living on this sinking Earth Ship, I think my title can still stand — with a new subtitle. Stay tuned…

A too long hiatus

Friday, January 23rd, 2009

From one kid to two can feel like from one to one hundred at times. Every day I think of comments to post, but not until now have I even opened this blog.  I can’t believe it’s been 1 1/2 years! Time goes by too fast.

Perhaps my 2009 resolution will be to be more timely in commenting.

Deer in Roslindale

Tuesday, May 22nd, 2007

This morning I looked out my window to see these two beauties!

smaller yetHow they managed to get to my yard, I don’t know. Our house borders the train tracks and then the Arboretum, but there’s a tall fence between the two. There is a small hole in the fence, but it seems too small for deer to fit through. Yet somehow, here they are!

Haikus for a Greener World

Friday, April 27th, 2007

The awesome Better World Travel Club (a green alternative to AAA) inspired these great green Haikus. Here one I like:

Leftover meatloaf
keeps cool and safe in my fridge,
but it heats the world*.

[*NOTE: The refrigerator heats the world, not the meatloaf]

- Erik N.
Portland, OR

However, I would beg to differ on his note that meatloaf does not heat the world. The meat industry is one of largest pollution industries in the world, growing larger every day as 3rd World people find more money to spend on meat.

Here’s a vegetarian Haiku:

Green leaves taste good

eating like a cow

instead of eating one

Being with children helps connects you to what matters most.

It’s hard to believe that the world would be a better place if all parents worked outside the home and left their children in childcare. Having the privilege to spend my days with my child, I get the privilege of viewing the world through her eyes and I believe this helps to remind me of how sacred every little thing is. I’m constantly amazed by the pleasure my daughter takes in the smallest things and I love her games and her newfound language. Most adults, including myself, have forgotten what it means to play. My daughter is teaching me to have more fun doing nothing and to laugh at silly things. If more of us could do this, I believe the world would be a better place.

Bats in the basement?

Wednesday, July 19th, 2006

Our housemate Lauren just came up from the basement saying she saw a bird or a bat. It was a bat. But how did it get in? I’ve been wishing for bats to come and eat the mosquitos and I imagined putting up a bat house somewhere in our yard. Yet somehow a bat decided the basement would be a good place to be. I guess I’d better be careful what I wish for. Eventually the bat went outside. It’s welcome to hang around as long as it doesn’t “hang” in the house.
